Understand the topic

Health inequalities are differences in health or access between groups. Housing, income, education, work, discrimination and the environment can influence risk and the ability to obtain care. Equality provides the same offer; equity considers different needs and barriers so that people have a fair opportunity to benefit.

How to discuss it in Med interview

Identify a specific barrier and its consequences, then propose an action at patient, service and policy level. Consider accessible information, interpreters, transport, appointment flexibility and community involvement. Ask how success would be measured across groups, since an improving average can hide widening gaps.

Put it into words

An online booking system may help many people but make access harder for someone without internet access or digital skills. Keeping a workable telephone or in-person route and testing the service with affected patients could reduce that barrier.

Common pitfalls

Blaming individuals for circumstances, stereotyping a community or claiming one intervention will remove every inequality.
