Understand the topic

Safeguarding concerns possible abuse, neglect or exploitation. Candour concerns openness when things go wrong in care. They are different responsibilities, but both require prompt action, factual communication and attention to the person affected. Students should use appropriate supervision and local procedures.

How to discuss it in Med interview

For a safeguarding disclosure, listen without leading questions, establish immediate safety and explain that you may need to share information with appropriate professionals. Record facts and escalate through the correct route. For an error, prioritise the patient's care, inform the responsible clinician, support an honest explanation and apology, and contribute to learning. Avoid speculating about blame before the facts are established.

Put it into words

Thank you for telling me. I am concerned about your safety. I cannot promise to keep this just between us, but I would explain who needs to help and involve you as far as possible.

Common pitfalls

Investigating suspected abuse yourself, promising secrecy, hiding an error or treating an apology as a substitute for action.
