Understand the topic

Empathy means trying to understand another person's experience without assuming you know how they feel. Communication also depends on language, disability, health literacy, culture and the environment. A clear explanation can still fail if the person feels unheard.

How to discuss it in Med interview

Start with an open question. Let the person finish, reflect back the concern and check your understanding. Use plain language and small pieces of information. Ask what matters to them, offer an appropriate communication adjustment and check understanding without making it feel like a test. In a clinical scenario, recognise the limits of your role.

Put it into words

It sounds as though the uncertainty about the appointment is particularly worrying. Have I understood that correctly? I can explain what I know and help you find the right person for the questions I cannot answer.

Common pitfalls

Saying you know exactly how someone feels, using jargon, interrupting, or offering reassurance that you cannot justify.
