Understand the topic
A promising mechanism or early study is a reason to investigate a treatment. It does not establish that it improves patients' lives. Licensing, guideline recommendations, funding decisions and local delivery answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable.
How to discuss it in Med interview
Identify the patient group, comparator and outcome. Examine benefit size, harms, study quality and follow-up. Then consider training, monitoring, cost and equitable access. Explain what evidence would change your view. Do not turn a Med interview answer about research into a treatment recommendation for a person.
Put it into words
A treatment may improve a laboratory marker without demonstrating better survival or quality of life. I would ask whether the marker is a reliable substitute and whether longer follow-up reveals benefits or harms that the initial trial missed.
Common pitfalls
Treating approval as proof that a treatment is best for everyone or ignoring the alternative treatment used in the study.
