Understand the topic
Healthcare resources include staff time, beds, facilities and funding. Spending on one service has an opportunity cost because those resources cannot simultaneously be used elsewhere. Cost-effectiveness examines outcomes in relation to cost; it is one consideration alongside fairness, severity of need and uncertainty.
How to discuss it in Med interview
Compare a proposal with its realistic alternative. Ask who benefits, how large and certain the benefit is, what implementation requires and whether access will be fair. Include prevention and community capacity where relevant. Explain a transparent decision process and how outcomes would be reviewed.
Put it into words
Extending clinic hours might improve access, but it needs sufficient staff and diagnostic support. I would compare its effect on waiting time, quality and staff wellbeing with other ways to use the same resources.
Common pitfalls
Treating the cheapest option as automatically best or suggesting a single funding increase resolves every operational problem.
