Understand the topic

Waiting for assessment or treatment can affect symptoms, mental wellbeing, work and caring responsibilities. Capacity depends on the whole pathway, including diagnostics, staff, theatre time, beds and discharge support. Waiting-list statistics may count pathways rather than unique people; always check the definition and date.

How to discuss it in Med interview

Discuss clinical urgency, deterioration while waiting and transparent prioritisation. Consider diagnostic capacity, prevention, community services and communication with patients. For each proposal, ask about staffing, quality and unequal access. Use a dated official figure only if you can explain what it measures.

Put it into words

Adding operating sessions could help, but only if assessment, recovery and follow-up capacity can support them. I would also ask how patients are monitored while waiting and how someone can report worsening symptoms.

Common pitfalls

Giving an undated headline number or assuming all patients should be prioritised solely by time already waited.
