Understand the topic
Medicines acting on GLP-1 pathways, and medicines with combined GIP/GLP-1 action, have raised questions about obesity treatment and health-service capacity. Products are not interchangeable: licences, evidence and NHS eligibility differ. NICE's tirzepatide guidance includes implementation arrangements, so eligibility in guidance does not mean immediate access for everyone.
How to discuss it in Med interview
Discuss potential health benefits alongside adverse effects, long-term evidence, treatment support and affordability. Explore how prioritisation can be fair and how stigma may deter people from care. Check current official guidance before stating an indication, eligibility threshold or availability. Keep a population-level discussion separate from advice for an individual patient.
Put it into words
I would assess outcomes that matter to patients, not just weight change. An equitable service would need clear eligibility, support and follow-up, while recognising that people face different barriers to obtaining care.
Common pitfalls
Calling a medicine suitable for everyone, treating obesity as a moral failing, or assuming every brand has the same indication.
