Understand the topic

This station explores whether your decision is informed and personal. Wanting to help people is a starting point; explain what attracts you to the particular combination of scientific reasoning, working with patients, teamwork and responsibility in medicine. Your interest can have developed gradually. You do not need a dramatic origin story or a prestigious placement.

How to discuss it in Med interview

Use three connected parts: what draws you to medicine, an experience that tested that interest, and what you learnt about being a doctor. Pick one specific moment from volunteering, caring, work experience or another honest experience. Explain what you noticed and how it changed your thinking. Acknowledge uncertainty, long training or emotional demands, then describe how you have explored whether these responsibilities suit you. Respect other healthcare careers when explaining your own preference.

Put it into words

An answer might connect enjoying scientific problems with noticing how a doctor explained uncertainty to a worried patient. The reflection is the important part: understanding the science helped, but listening and involving the patient also mattered. Finish by explaining why you want to develop both skills. Replace this example with your own experience; rehearsing someone else's story will make follow-up questions harder.

Common pitfalls

Listing achievements, claiming doctors help more than other professionals, or reciting an idealised account with no recognition of the challenges.
