Understand the topic

Digital records and remote services can support continuity and convenience. They also raise questions about appropriate access, data quality, security and whether everyone can use the service. Information used for direct care and information used for other purposes can require different governance arrangements.

How to discuss it in Med interview

Define the use case and the data genuinely needed. Discuss understandable information for patients, approved access controls, a lawful basis and oversight. Consider alternatives for people without devices, connectivity, privacy at home or digital skills. Ask what happens during an outage and how incorrect records are corrected.

Put it into words

A remote consultation may save travel but be unsuitable if the patient cannot speak privately or needs examination. A good service gives people an appropriate route to in-person care and explains how their information is handled.

Common pitfalls

Assuming digital means accessible or treating anonymisation and pseudonymisation as the same thing.
