Understand the topic

Workforce debates include retention, workload, training opportunities and how different roles contribute to care. The 2025 Leng review examined physician associate and anaesthesia associate roles and made recommendations on their future use. A review recommendation and an implemented policy are different; current titles, scope and local arrangements need checking.

How to discuss it in Med interview

Put patient safety and clear role identification first. Ask about training, scope, supervision, escalation and evidence of outcomes. Discuss possible service benefits alongside demands on supervisors and effects on training. Treat colleagues respectfully and examine the actual task instead of assuming everyone in one profession has identical competence.

Put it into words

Patients should understand who is assessing them and how to reach the clinician responsible for their care. A staffing model needs evidence, appropriate supervision and enough capacity for both service delivery and training.

Common pitfalls

Hostile generalisations about a profession, equating different training routes or claiming every recommendation is already policy.
