Understand the topic
Vaccination reduces the risk of vaccine-preventable illness and can help protect people who are particularly vulnerable. Decisions may be influenced by trust, access, past experiences and information. Lower uptake is not automatically evidence that everyone involved rejects vaccination.
How to discuss it in Med interview
Ask what specifically worries the person, listen and acknowledge the concern without endorsing false information. Explain relevant benefits and risks in clear terms using reliable sources. Address practical barriers and give space for questions. When discussing measles or an outbreak, check current official guidance and avoid repeating an old schedule as if it were current.
Put it into words
I would ask which claim they have seen and what worries them most. Then I would look at the evidence with them and explain what it can and cannot show, while checking whether booking or attending an appointment is also difficult.
Common pitfalls
Ridiculing concerns, saying an intervention has zero risk or assuming more facts alone will resolve a lack of trust.
