Understand the topic

Smoking causes substantial harm. NHS guidance describes nicotine vaping as less harmful than smoking and a possible aid for adults quitting cigarettes, while emphasising that vaping is not risk-free and is not for children or non-smokers. Those distinctions matter when evaluating public-health policy.

How to discuss it in Med interview

Identify the population and policy aim. Consider support for adults to stop smoking alongside reducing youth uptake, marketing exposure and environmental harm. Discuss enforcement, unintended consequences and access to cessation support. Check the current law before making claims about sales restrictions or proposed legislation.

Put it into words

A policy should make it easier for adults to stop smoking without normalising nicotine use among young people. I would assess both smoking cessation outcomes and youth uptake, because success on one measure may hide problems on another.

Common pitfalls

Calling vaping harmless, treating it as equally harmful as smoking without evidence or confusing a legislative proposal with current law.
